8407 Kitchen Bar

Washington DCTagged american, food, silver spring

I met a friend for lunch here at 8407, courtesy of a look up on Yelp. It was nearby where I was staying. Yet knowing it was in downtown Silver Spring, I was worried about parking. Don’t fret, it’s right next to a large parking garage. Bring quarters or have your smart phone ready. You can pay via mobile as long as you sign up.

The layout of the place was unexpected. Upon entering, there’s a bar to the right with some table seating next to the window and towards the back wall. You’d think the venue was small, but if you’re seated in the main area, upstairs, you’ll know this place was set to plenty of medium to large parties. Given it was lunch, we only needed a table for two. Plenty of seating. Oddly enough we were seated next to a wall rather than the window. Sure, I’d usually change tables, but my friend happen to be pregnant and she was already seated. Why would I make a fuss.

Anyways, onto the food. Not sure why some reviews categorized this place as a gastropub. I think it’s more American with variety. It doesn’t have that edgy takes on dishes. Nor do I think they should. Their dishes are pretty solid and you’re meant to sit down, take your time, and enjoy the meal. Yeah, like a restaurant, restaurant. But if you insist, go ahead and order rounds of sophisticated beer and nibble on your food into the night. I won’t stop you.

Verdict: Good food if you happen to find yourself in Silver Spring. Though, I wouldn’t go out of my way to try it.

Outside @8407

Although the sign was very obvious, it might be a little difficult finding this place without GPS. It's off the main street and around the corner from parking. Most likely, you won't see it by simply driving by.

Chicken Liver Pate @8407 Kitchen Bar

I'm a fan of pâté. So when I saw this, it peaked my interest. It was surprisingly obvious and shed light on my limited range of pâté's around the world. Never even thought your every day fowl could produce this delicacy. It works. But if you put it up against duck pate, I'll take the latter. The bread served made for a good delivery mechanism. Lightly buttered, the texture compliments the creaminess. Not bad. $7.00USD

Ox Impressions:

Duck Fat French Fries @8407 Kitchen Bar

If you're imagining what cooking fries in duck fat can do, well, me too. Maybe it was the texture which was lighter crisp but that might as well been the potato or how it was cooked. As for any after taste, well, no luck for any duck. Don't let that take anything away though. Still some good fries. $5.00USD

Ox Impressions:

Sirloin Steak Cobb Salad @8407 Kitchen Bar

I took the waiters recommendation and he was spot on. What a great salad. Top it with these juicy medium rare cuts of sirloin and you'll have me grazing. The beef was lightly seasoned and provided the fresh crispy greens with one savory edge. I'd order this again. $14.00USD

Ox Impressions:

Dry Aged Beef Burger @8407 Kitchen Bar

I didn't actually have this burger so I can't write too much about it. My lunch partner devoured it. So I'm guessing it wasn't too bad. And yeah, she added bacon for an extra buck. That's a good amount of it. $12.00USD
