Finding Galbi Jjim East in the Valley

Los AngelesTagged drinking, food, korean, san gabriel, stone pot

Deciding not to try our luck with parking in Koreatown, we went to Sun Nong Dan’s expansion restaurant out in San Gabriel Valley. We ordered what they were known for, their galbi jjim, spicy braised short rib and ox tail. Of course, we did the small combo for $55.99 USD. It’s meant for four people. But hey, we were two guys with a hefty appetite. It included, the main course, a sizeable beef soup, and alcohol. Pretty good deal in my book. Though, our additional rounds of soju and beer offset all that.

But hey, it was a night for food and libations.

It was a busy place when we got there around 8pm. Yet, there was no problem ordering our food and refilling our drinks. This place was made for this type of environment. People eating well and getting drunk while doing it. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not all crazy loud. There were several families here which I can’t say for the Koreatown location. So things weren’t over the top. Plus this was only our first stop for the night. Drunk and stupid was reserved for downtown.

At the end, we concluded the obvious, the combo was too much food for us. Especially since we were drinking. That shouldn’t stop you from trying this comforting food and kinda feels like home cooking. Well, if your home has a stone pot and good supply of short ribs.

Verdict: I recommend trying out a meal here which isn’t going to drain the wallet.

Galbi Jjim

Here's what we've been waiting for, spicy braized short rib simmering in a hot stone pot. Also in there were some rice cakes, potatoes, and small bits of ox tail. Trust me, the short rib is all you need and between the both of us, we barely finished off the proteins. We probably could have taken the stuff home but we were heading into the city that night.

Ox Impressions:

Beef Soup

We barely had room to touch this, but the little I had let me know that it would have been great along with the spicy braised short rib. Yeah, we're going to need reinforcements next time.

Ox Impressions:

The Banchan

Although you may not get too much variety in the side dishes, they were good and endless. Given the spice level of the main dish, we skipped the refills on the kimchi. :P

Ox Impressions:

Brown Rice

I'm not sure if this literally counts as brown rice, but if it is, I'll have this always. It's far from dry, almost like sticky rice, and tastes great with this meal. I'd probably pick this over white rice as well.
