A Dash Reboot

I remember going to Dash when it was right across from the movie theater. Now it sits in core downtown San Mateo offering an upgraded dining experience with its larger space. My friends and I stopped by to check out all the changes. There’s much more room now and houses a larger sushi bar space for those who want to chat up the chefs. But if you want table service, there’s plenty of room for that. If you happen to find George behind the counter (not pictured), you’re up for…

Finding Galbi Jjim East in the Valley

Deciding not to try our luck with parking in Koreatown, we went to Sun Nong Dan’s expansion restaurant out in San Gabriel Valley. We ordered what they were known for, their galbi jjim, spicy braised short rib and ox tail. Of course, we did the small combo for $55.99 USD. It’s meant for four people. But hey, we were two guys with a hefty appetite. It included, the main course, a sizeable beef soup, and alcohol. Pretty good deal in my book. Though, our additional rounds of soju and beer offset all…

6 PM Seating at Hinata

There are two things I love and one thing I wish they can do at Hinata Sushi. First, the quality of food at the price point for their omakase. You can’t find a new sushi restaurant focused on quality without charging you over $120, but this place does. And they do it without cutting corners. Just look at that fish below. Next, the atmosphere. When you first walk in and see the space, you’ll wonder why they don’t try and cram more tables in like every other place trying to survive…

An Evening of Izakaya in the Mission

Friday night and we were in the mood for food and drinks. So what comes to mind, Japanese food, izakaya to be exact. And with all the places catering to this fanfare, it was difficult to choose. But we knew we wanted, quality and the ability to venture out for round two for drinks. Enter Izakaya Rintaro, which is nestled in the Mission and within walking distance to many of our favorite bars like Butter and the Willow and whatever happened to Holy Cow. Is it still the local bar…

Four Weeks for Wakuriya

Once I got called back for my reservation request I was so damn gleeful. And yeah, that’s right, it was a reservation request. You call and leave a message for the days you think you can make it and they’ll call back to confirm. It’s not some automated response either. You get to talk to the host. That’s right, they call up each potential patron. Now if that was any indication on the level of service we were in store for, I knew we were in for a treat. After all, this…

Gather for Dinner

When I think of Wyoming, I think of the beautiful mountains, the vast wildlife, and the parks that maintain that balance between them. So when it comes to dinner, I wasn’t too surprised to find a place that took advantage of the abundance surrounding them. Take Gather, a restaurant in the heart of Jackson. It specializes in creating wonderful dishes with local ingredients. Some of it, as we learned, were even hand picked that morning. This was a place we all hope to stumble upon in our travels. The restaurant itself…

Discovering a Pleasant Purgatory

Utah may not be known for the bar scene, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t gems in the town of Salt Lake City. Take Purgatory, a place where you can go for a drink, a meal, or both. They opened in 2017 nearby a mortuary which will make you think twice now about its name. But hey, if this is where I need to go to cleanse my soul then order me up a few drinks. Cause I’m going to enjoy this place the best way I can, at the bar. That’s the…

Dipping Those Chewy Ramen Noodles

2pm. That’s about the perfect time, for those who hate waiting, to arrive at Tsujita LA Artisan Noodles Annex. This was of course an additional restaurant to the one across the street. However, at this time, the original location incurred a lower health score, so I decided to try the annexed location. There was a small line at 1:30pm which cleared up after I finished lunch. And by cleared up, I meant no lines, and several open tables. Inside, the majority of the place is dedicated to the ramen bar that surrounds the noodle chef with…
