Past Closing at Sushi Izakaya Gaku

A quick drive out of Waikiki, you can find Sushi Izakaya Gaku. A place that has been serving up creative dishes for izakaya while also providing some elaborate sushi. We happen to come here primarily for the izakaya. Not to say we didn’t sample some of that wonderful fish. But mainly we wanted a festive night of drinking as we feasted. We arrived at the restaurant around 8pm and put our name on the list. The wait time was about an hour for our group, a party of seven. While…

Sakae Sushi

Time for another night of omakase and tonight we are checking out Sakae Sushi. It’s a modest size establishment on the corner of Burlingame, right across the street of the Caltrain station. So if you’re traveling by rail, this place would be convenient. But if you’re driving here, you should be able to find parking around the area. There’s even a small paid parking lot nearby. Last year I had visited this place and got the lesser priced sushi omakase which had a delightful selection of nigiri. I’ve been wondering about their…

First Eats in NYC, Onigiri

After getting situated in Chelsea it was time to find a bite to eat. Being close to Madison Square Gardens you’re surrounded by plenty of places to eat. However, if you just came off a red eye flight, took the train to Penn Station, and were still on West Coast hours, you’re probably looking for a lighter meal. I found that at Cafe Hanamizuki, a quaint little restaurant surrounded by the less refined shops catering to the eat and go lunch crowds. Inside you’re greeted by a bright interior leading up to…

Finding Izakaya in Silicon Valley

There are many places around South Bay where you can go to enjoy some food and drinks with your co-workers. For starters, you have all those restaurants around downtown Mountain View on Castro street. Of course, most of them cater to the power lunch crowds. You can’t blame them since business rents in that area are as astronomical as residential rents. So to find a more down to earth comfort foods, you have to look elsewhere. For us, we had two requirements, close to the office and Japanese izakaya. Enter Tanto. It’s located on El Camino…

Sobaten Japanese Cutlet

It was lunchtime and we continued our Japanese food run by hitting up Sobaten Japanese Cutlet. As the name hints, this place specializes in katsu and boy do they do a good job. Not to mention, the variations they have on this Japanese staple. It ranges from chicken, to shrimp, to cheese filled, to mille-feuille, and even cheese filled mille-feuille katsu. There’s plenty to try. Located in the lower level of the Henry House, you’ll need to go down some small stairs to get there. It’s a bit narrow and kinda dark. But…

Shika Teppan-Yaki

It was my friend’s birthday and we decided to head out for Japanese. Unsure of what exactly we wanted, sushi or teppanyaki we opted for Shika Teppan-Yaki. It’s situated in Causeway Bay a little bit away from the busy streets. That set up the hopes for a nice dinner with my friends as we walked there. Inside, the place was set up for both sushi and teppanyaki. That is, one side was the sushi bar and perpendicular to it were teppanyaki stations. Even though we weren’t going to do teppanyaki…

Itacho Sushi

There are tons of sushi restaurants in Hong Kong with a good variety of them in Causeway Bay. You can find high end establishments to your conveyor belt chains. What we chose was some where in between, Itacho Sushi. The prices weren’t too exorbitant and they had a huge selection of fish as well as some unfamiliar ones, like foie gras sushi. Interesting indeed. One of the things you do need to know about this place is their tablet ordering system. Pretty high tech but you lose that interaction with the sushi…

Katte Shabu Shabu

It was drizzling and, dare I say it, a bit chilly, here in Hong Kong. I was expecting hot, humid, and threatening thunderstorms in March. This was pleasant. Almost felt like I never left San Francisco. Almost. Anyways, it was hot pot weather. Being mid afternoon, I was alone and hungry. I looked up a place that did individual pots. Sure enough a few came up with Katte pulling in high marks. And best of all, it was close by. Though, I should have noticed the reviews were all from lunch. More…
